Meeting with Search Firms

On Monday evening two search firms presented their credentials and the processes they employ to members of the Board of Education. Both firms, Ray and Associates and BWP, made impressive presentations and I was satisfied that either could provide the services we are seeking.

The presenters both emphasized community engagement in the process and outlined methods for involving stakeholders within the system and in the communities.

At the conclusion of the meeting Board President Roberts indicated the selection of one of these firms will be a topic at the next work session, November 17 in Fairhope. A vote is anticipated at the regular board meeting on November 19.

  1. The one thing I found interesting between the two companies was the fact that BWP has enlisted the help of Dr. Dodge. I think he brought a "local" perspective to the search endeavor. He is very familiar with the surrounding area and was able to cite clear examples of why he would be such a good complement to the search committee.

Another thought that came to me in the meeting was the idea about a "non-traditional" candidate. Hoover City Schools hired a non-traditional candidate in 2006 when they hired their Superintendent. Andy Craig was not previously a teacher or an administrator. He was in fact a Finance Director before taking the helm as Superintendent. Before that he was an Auditor and Accountant. I believe he has just an MBA and not a doctorial degree. In these economic times, this may just be what Baldwin needs. Together the Superintendent and Jean would could make a good team trying to find ways to bring Baldwin back from this economic downturn.
